Bloomsday in Salzburg

For almost 75 years, Salzburg has celebrated Irish author James Joyce on the day of his famous novel Ulysses, 16 June. Since 2008, the Gunnar Berg Ensemble Salzburg has been the house ensemble for Salzburg Bloomsday – named after Leopold Bloom, the main character in Ulysses.

Bloomsday Salzburg 2024 is a collaboration between Verein Literaturhaus, Salzburger Gesellschaft für Musik and Institut für Neue Musik/Mozarteum Salzburg as a Sunday matinee at Mozarteum Universität. On Sunday 16 June at 11am, writers, composers and musicians invite you to free readings and premieres of newly composed musical works inspired by James Joyce. The performers are Swiss author Reto Hänny, Austrian author, artist and filmmaker Michaela Mandel and Joyce expert Kurt Palm. The Sunday matinee also features five world premieres by Salzburg composer Klaus Ager, German composers Julia Deppert-Lang and Benjamin Lang, Viennese composer Hannes Heher and Nicole Younes, whose work is based on Ulysses drawings by Nicolaus Mahler.

Gunnar Berg Ensemble Salzburg.
The music will be performed by Salzburg’s Gunnar Berg Ensemble, founded in 2008 by Klaus Ager and Yvonne Zehner and for this occasion consisting of Finnish soprano Suvi Väyrynen, Italian percussionist Ivan Mancinelli and Salzburg-based guitar duo Christina Schorn-Mancinelli & Yvonne Zehner.
